Holly (my character) has over-sized hair and acrylic nails! Love it.

My character is very in love with her boyfriend Troy and totally excited to move to Detroit.

This project was so fun! What a great cast and crew. It’ll be coming out in May.

Had a great time filming ANGEL OF DEATH last week, directed by Ibrahim Elma. Played a sad girl! The crew kept it together despite VERY LOUD CONSTRUCTION in the background, which would have made me laugh if it weren’t so awful.

New York: Best place to get stabbed by the harbor

So today I worked on a short film titled “Commencement” (with an awesome cast & crew). In the film I get stabbed by the harbor…but here’s the punchline: in real life I forgot to bring a change of clothes to wear home. My character’s really pregnant, so this pic is AFTER I took off the pregnant stomach.

Gotta Love New York, I came home like this on the train.

So here I am riding the G back to Queens, and New Yorkers didn’t have a thing to say about it. So hilarious. One lady came and sat right next to me in the train station, acting like everything was totally normal.

Another guy looked for an extra minute at my dress, and then decided I wasn’t moaning so…..

Ironically, the ONLY person who I saw do a visible double-take was the HOMELESS CRACK-ADDICT WHO ASKS ME FOR CHANGE EVERY DAY. How hilarious is that. He walked past me today and then totally stopped and looked again. I guess he wanted to check if he was seeing right…. Apparently he’s more attuned to reality than the office-people rushing down the street.

I am amazed by your sparkly heart.

How do you keep it open when life is always pushing to make it brittle? I watch how your heart bends with life and loss and how you heal it with sunlight.

It has scars, like anything else that lives exposed. Any fragile flower knows it takes a risk to show up and grow: living is vulnerability.

Over time most people decide hearts are safer indoors (with protective pots and spikey fences along the perimeter). Yours remains planted, however, in an accessible place…where both the sunlight and the rain can get at it. Open is the bravest place for a heart to be.

So your biggest feat, sparkly-heart, is the person that you are.

We were just another project you worked on along the road of becoming yourself (isn’t that hilarious? Can you believe you did all that in tiny capri pants?).

And of course, you deserve more than one special day for keeping me in one piece so far….

Here I stand intact, the product of relentless and tender patchwork. Arms, check. Legs, check. Ten fingers, present. Scars neosporined. Heartbreaks healed. Pieces wounded along the way, mended and glued back together again.

There was the time I was dancing & jumping in the bathroom (why?) and poked my eye with a tv antenna (how?) and went screaming to you. I ran to you with my hand over my eye, hysterical that I had poked my eye out (okay, I was like 10). You definitely winced.

Now that I’m an adult, I can understand why my mother didn’t want to look. For starters, it’s truly just a matter of time until someone’s eye gets poked out. There were six of us, so you can only imagine how the probability of serious injury increases. If four kids have both eyes, it’s only more likely that the fifth is going to have to lose one….

Oh my poor mother. In addition to an early love for short skirts & eyeliner, I have always liked anything high-up, flying and fast. I can’t tell you the number of fences I hit at high-impact, starting with my banana-seat bike. Now I hear awful stories of cars wrapped around telephone poles; I did the same thing at eight, with an aluminum-steel park swingset. Flying down the highest hills I could find, as fast as I could go. Now as an adult I wonder: how do kids transform such harmless-looking slides and swings into tools of carnage?

She didn’t see most of it, thank God. We’d come home battle-weary, occasionally wounded. I’m laughing, to think back on how tired you must have been…and how you did it all with eyeliner on. AND after all this time your heart is still open.
